When Karen and Michael have a fight, she moves out and comes back home in the middle of the night wanting to stay with the family. She asks Jack to get her things from Michael's house and he brings Kevin and Wayne to help him in this awkward moment. But when they get there, Jack tells Michael he didn't want them living like this, and finds out neither did Michael, who then divulges what the reason for the fight was actually about--he asked Karen to marry him. But Karen doesn't believe in marriage and thinks it's an "antiquated, male-centered institution" and believes Michael wants to change her. Michael, follows the Arnolds back to their house to reconcile with Karen, but she asks him to leave. However, Michael comes back with his tent and pitches it out on the front lawn, making his final stand for love as the family watches him literally stand for hours in the pouring rain waiting for Karen to come out. Jack tells Karen that "any guy who goes through all this by standing out in the rain must really be crazy about her". Eventually, Karen realizes how much Michael loves her and goes outside in the thunder storm to bring him coffee Norma made, but instead they make up in a soaking embracing. Ten days later Karen asks Micheal to marry her and he accepted.
